What better way to celebrate the springtime than with a restorative little getaway in our very own country Vic? We recently discovered the pastoral charms of Nagambie, a tranquil riverside town offering some of the state’s most picturesque vineyards along with exceptional farm-to-table dining, stellar accommodation and hectares of spectacular native bushland. Just under two hours from Melbourne, Nagambie remains untouched by the hustle and bustle that has transformed the likes of Daylesford and Healesville, offering a peaceful escape complete with all the modern comforts us Melburnians know and love.
Stay – Mitchelton
The name ‘Mitchelton’ has become synonymous with Nagambie, and for good reason. While visiting the winery alone is a delight, we highly recommend staying at the hotel to fully immerse yourself in everything the estate offers – from the farm-to-table restaurant and day spa to the gallery, providore and pool. Don’t miss the climb up the historic 55- metre-high viewing tower for breathtaking panoramic views of the region.

Drink – Tahblik Estate
No trip to the Goulburn Valley is complete without a visit to Victoria’s oldest winery, Tahbilk. Established in 1860 and owned by five generations, this carbon-neutral winery and vineyard is celebrated for its exceptional Shiraz and Marsanne. Enjoy a leisurely lunch and wine tasting at the charming restaurant, which offers stunning views over the tranquil backwaters of the Tahbilk billabong, and be sure to request a tour of the historic underground cellar (we hear it’s haunted)!

Eat – Eighteen Sixty
Our team enjoyed a long lunch at Eighteen Sixty a few months ago and we were absolutely blown away by the experience. The Italian-inspired menu showcases local produce through a selection of mouth-watering antipasti (order the warm focaccia with whipped ricotta), charcuterie boards and some of the best pasta we’ve ever tasted, served within a cosy and intimate dining room. The drinks menu is equally impressive, offering a curated mix of local wines, international varietals and classic Aperitivi.

Shop – The Corner Nook
After lunch, stretch the legs with a spot of retail therapy along the main street. Owned by Nagambie local Jacqui Anderson, former owner of the Nagambie Bakery, The Corner Nook is a treasure trove of charming homewares, gifts and lifestyle products, each one embodying a rustic sensibility. Brimming with everything from handwoven textiles to rare vintage finds, the store embodies the spirit of craftsmanship and authentic quality that defines this corner of the world.

Explore – Mount Wombat Lookout Track
For adventure lovers, Mount Wombat Lookout Track offers a rewarding yet relatively easy 5.68 km hike that culminates in panoramic views of Mt. Buller, Waranga Basin, and the distant Goulburn Weir at Nagambie. While you can drive directly to the summit, the scenic walk through the nature reserve is well worth the effort. The trail features diverse native flora and the chance to spot local wildlife, allowing you to get a proper nature fix before heading back to the big smoke.
